A senior American diplomat stated that the election, scheduled by the military council for next year, cannot reflect the people's will under the current circumstances. Daniel Kritenbrink, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, expressed this concern in an interview with VOA today.
Kritenbrink also noted that the military council has yet to implement ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus, and there are no conditions in place to ensure a safe and secure election.
He further warned that holding the election under these conditions could lead to an escalation of violence and prolong the conflict. Kritenbrink emphasized that the military council should not proceed with elections until true peace and reconciliation are achieved.
