The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Mr. Thomas Andrews, announced today that he will visit Australia for over a week to discuss the Myanmar crisis. During his visit from October 1 to 10, he is scheduled to meet with Australian government officials in Canberra to discuss Australia’s stance on the Myanmar issue and explore ways the country can advocate for the human rights of the Myanmar people, according to a statement released today.
Mr. Andrews will also visit Sydney and Melbourne, where he will meet with experts aiding newly arrived individuals from Myanmar. Additionally, he will hold meetings with humanitarian, refugee, and Australian civil society organizations. Following the February 2021 military coup in Myanmar, the Special Rapporteur plans to engage with Myanmar nationals from diverse backgrounds, including refugees who have resettled in Australia.
