Julie Bishop, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, told a UN meeting on October 29 that she visited Naypyidaw and met with military junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, without going into details nor did she specify the exact timing.
She emphasized the need for all parties involved in Myanmar’s crisis to move past a “zero-sum mentality” in order to find solutions.
The former Australian foreign minister made the comments during her first report at the UN human rights committee meeting since being appointed by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres last April.
She also said that she's spoken with various stakeholders in Myanmar, including representatives from the NLD, NUG, NUCC, CRPH, ethnic armed organizations and civil society organizations. She confirmed her efforts to meet with all stakeholders impartially.
"I aim to understand the different and often conflicting perspectives so that through my role I can encourage greater coordination with regional and global efforts to facilitate an agreed solution," she said.
"Myanmar actors must move beyond the current zero-sum mentality. There can be little progress on addressing the needs of the people while armed conflict continues across the country,” she stated.
