During a meeting with ASEAN leaders in Vientiane, Laos, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the urgent need for global cooperation to restore peace in Myanmar. He stated that achieving peace is more necessary now than ever.
“For the people of Myanmar who are in need of peace, I urge all countries to leverage their influence to listen to Myanmar and find an inclusive political solution. We must work towards the peaceful future that the people of Myanmar deserve,” Guterres said to the ASEAN leaders.
The Secretary-General also noted that the situation in Myanmar is increasingly complicated, with rising violence. He pointed out that the humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly, with one-third of the country’s population in need of assistance and millions of people fleeing their homes.
Guterres added that despite it being over seven years since the mass exodus of Rohingya refugees, there remains a long way to go in finding a lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis.
