The head of the United Nations Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) reported that violent acts against civilians in Myanmar are intensifying, involving both military forces and groups opposing the military.
At a press conference held on November 1 at the United Nations headquarters in New York, IIMM Chief Nicholas Koumjian stated that the National Unity Government (NUG) is actively cooperating with the IIMM to investigate these incidents.
“The National Unity Government has been gathering information and collaborating on investigations into crimes committed. However, on the side of the Military Council, there has been no cooperation,” Koumjian said. “We have observed actions by groups opposing the military to investigate their own abuses, but the military has shown no similar initiative.”
Koumjian further explained that the IIMM is collecting evidence on severe international crimes in Myanmar, following a mandate from the UN Human Rights Council, and is focusing on crimes not motivated by ethnic, religious, or political bias.
Koumjian also noted a rise in violent incidents in Myanmar over the past year, including an increase in airstrikes that have terrorized civilians. He added that reports indicate detainees held by the military, including minors, have suffered harassment and sexual abuse.
