UN expert says international efforts to end Myanmar’s civil war ‘not working’

Tom Andrews, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, stated on October 10 during a visit to Australia that international efforts to end Myanmar’s civil war are clearly not working.

“The international response to this crisis is clearly not working,” he said while calling for an emergency summit. He urged for an urgent strategic action and to cut off financial, weapons, and legitimacy to Myanmar's military junta.

Mr. Andrews has visited Australia for 10 days and urged Australia to take the lead in pushing for more effective regional and international responses to the Myanmar issue.

He highlighted that the situation in Myanmar continues to worsen, with more than 3 million people displaced from their homes. Since the military seized power, the junta has been arresting and oppressing opposition forces, burning villages, and launching airstrikes. Over 5,600 civilians have been killed by the junta, and more than 20,000 people have been detained, Mr. Andrews said.
