U.S. Supports ASEAN Efforts to Resolve Myanmar Crisis

The United States has expressed its support for ASEAN’s efforts to address the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. A joint statement following the 6th high-level meeting between U.S. and Malaysian senior officials highlighted the U.S.‘s endorsement of Malaysia’s upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025, recognizing Malaysia’s role in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

The statement noted that the U.S. fully supports ASEAN’s efforts to address the situation in Myanmar, emphasizing the importance of ASEAN’s leadership in addressing regional challenges. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the comprehensive partnership between the U.S. and Malaysia, senior officials met in Putrajaya on October 21 to discuss cooperation and reaffirm their partnership.

The October 24 statement also acknowledged ASEAN’s crucial role in tackling issues beyond Myanmar, including broader matters in the Indo-Pacific region. It underscored the need for active regional and international dialogue to address various challenges, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where diplomatic efforts are needed to de-escalate tensions.

The United States remains firmly supportive of ASEAN’s efforts to implement shared agreements related to Myanmar’s situation. In a recent statement following the ASEAN-U.S. Summit in Laos, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted that certain countries, including Myanmar, are violating the fundamental principles outlined in UN and ASEAN agreements.
