U.S. Secretary Blinken Pledges Accelerated Support for Myanmar’s Democratic Future

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the United States is accelerating efforts to build a more peaceful and inclusive democracy in Myanmar. Speaking at a press conference in Vientiane, Laos, Blinken emphasized the U.S. commitment to supporting people in Myanmar and around the world in creating a free and democratic future for themselves.

“We are working at high speed to foster a more peaceful and inclusive democracy in Myanmar,” Blinken said.

At the same press conference, Blinken condemned North Korea’s regional threats and highlighted the United States’ continued efforts to promote stability in the Indo-Pacific, particularly along the Taiwan Strait. He stressed the importance of free sea and air navigation in the region for trade and global stability.

Before the press conference, Blinken met with ASEAN leaders, where he addressed the significance of continued support for ASEAN’s role in regional stability. He pointed out that some countries, including Myanmar, are violating fundamental United Nations and ASEAN principles regarding the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.

Blinken also reaffirmed U.S. support for ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus aimed at achieving peace in Myanmar, calling for an end to violence and the initiation of inclusive dialogue.

During his visit to Laos for the East Asia Summit, Blinken reiterated the United States’ commitment to applying diplomatic pressure on Myanmar’s military junta and continuing efforts to address the situation in Myanmar.
