U.S. Reaffirms Support for Myanmar’s Pro-Democracy Movement and NUG

The U.S. government has reaffirmed its support for pro-democracy groups, including the National Unity Government (NUG), in efforts to restore multi-party democracy in Myanmar. The U.S. Department of State told the BBC that it will continue its efforts to help resolve ongoing conflicts in Myanmar and encourages the military to engage in meaningful dialogue with all relevant stakeholders to return to democratic rule.

The U.S. emphasized that its aid is aimed at saving lives, not causing harm, and that it should not contribute to further violence. Since the 2021 military coup, the U.S. has provided hundreds of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid to pro-democracy forces and ethnic organizations, which has been delivered through civil organizations directly reaching people not under military control.

The U.S. also continues to support governance programs, local health and education policy development, and pro-democracy groups in building a future federal democracy in Myanmar. The U.S. Department of State expressed support for the Burma Act of 2022, which enables further assistance to the people of Myanmar and ethnic armed organizations. The act also bolsters the democracy movement, with pledges to work with the U.S. Congress to increase aid aimed at curbing military violence against civilians.

Requests for assistance from ethnic organizations, local civil society groups, and pro-democracy forces focused on civilian protection and building community resilience are under careful review."
