U.S. Designates Myanmar as Major Drug-Producing and Exporting Nation

In a statement issued on September 15th, U.S. President Joe Biden announced Myanmar, Bolivia, and Venezuela as nations that failed to meet anti-narcotics obligations over the past 12 months.

The U.S. government emphasized its support as crucial for drug control efforts in these countries. The list also includes nations involved in the production and export of chemicals used in drug manufacturing, which impact the United States directly.

Along with Myanmar, other countries named in the announcement include Afghanistan, Bolivia, China, India, Laos, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Venezuela, El Salvador, Bahamas, Belize, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic.

The United Nations and the international community have also warned that drug production has increased due to armed conflict and instability since the military coup in 2021, when the civilian government was removed from Myanmar.
