The military council announced that more than two thousand prisoners would be released.
Prisoners who have been sentenced under Section 505-A of the Penal Code in various prisons and camps. The Military Council announced on the morning of May 3 that 2,153 prisoners had been released with reduced sentences to mark the Kason Full Moon Day.
Not a complete release, but Section-401 of the Criminal Code, the statement also stated that if he commits the crime again under sub-section (1), he will continue to face the remaining punishment in addition to that punishment.
"Now, the release is only under section 505. But those who were imprisoned under that section and were about to be released are released for less than a year. Now, we know that there are no people who are under section 505. And there are no people who are in prison under other sections besides section-505. Act 401 is what they do by tying and beating them."
The military council wrote in a statement that the release was made with an emphasis on humanitarian aid and peace of mind for the public to commemorate the Kason full moon day.
In the two years since the coup, the military council has granted amnesty several times, but this is the first time it has announced that only political prisoners will be released.
Before this time, from February 2021 to 2023, in the first four months, amnesties were announced 11 times, and 337 foreign prisoners and 69,417 national prisoners were released, according to the military council's statements.
Among them, there are 5,444 political prisoners, but only 2,373 can be verified, according to the Association for the Assistance of Political Prisoners (AAPP).
According to AAPP's statistics as of May 2, in more than two years of the coup, 17,897 pro-democracy activists and citizens have been arrested, and 5,839 of them have been sentenced to prison terms.
