The invitation of the military to the EU-ASEAN talks was rejected.

The National Unity Government and human rights activists have criticized the invitation of the Myanmar Military Council representative to the EU-and ASEAN civil society talks on human rights held on October 3 in Brussels, Belgium.

On October 3, the NUG government issued a statement that it was shocked that a representative of the Myanmar military, which is committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, was allowed to attend the EU-ASEAN civil society talks. NUG also urges the EU and ASEAN inter-governmental human rights commissions to hold human rights talks for Myanmar only with those who officially represent the people of Myanmar.

In a joint statement issued by 45 organizations active in Myanmar, including HRW Human Rights Watch, it was pointed out that inviting the military council representative does not meet human rights standards. The European Union has sanctioned Myanmar military leaders, and the military council is also banned from attending conferences held by ASEAN leaders.
