Thai Prime Minister has called on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to take decisive action in addressing the ongoing civil war in Myanmar. Speaking in Bangkok today, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra emphasized that ASEAN must assume a key role in bringing peace to Myanmar ahead of the upcoming ASEAN summit in Laos.
She also stated her intention to collaborate with Malaysia, which will assume the ASEAN chairmanship next year, to resolve the conflict through diplomatic means. While ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus on resolving the Myanmar crisis was established, progress has been limited. Due to the lack of implementation, representatives of Myanmar’s military council have been barred from attending high-level ASEAN meetings.
The ASEAN Leaders' Summit is taking place in Laos, the current ASEAN Chair, from October 6 to 11. A senior official from Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to attend, sparking objections from the National Unity Government (NUG), which opposes the presence of any representative from the military council at the meeting.
