Thai Parliament to Discuss UWSA Border Tensions

The Thai Parliament's National Security Committee is set to discuss the United Wa State Army (UWSA) on December 13. The powerful ethnic armed group, based in eastern Shan State, Myanmar, has raised concerns among Thai officials due to its activities near the border.

Rangsiman Rome, Deputy Leader of the People’s Party and Chairman of the National Security Committee, expressed worries about the UWSA's presence, as reported by the Bangkok Post.

The Thai military has issued a demand for the UWSA to dismantle nine camps in Mongton Township, Shan State, by December 18. While accusing the UWSA of border incursions, the Thai military has assured that the situation remains relatively calm.

A UWSA spokesperson confirmed the Thai military’s request but emphasized that it’s a matter to be resolved through bilateral negotiations and has been presented to the country’s leadership.

Rome voiced concerns about the UWSA’s reputation and the potential misuse of electricity supplied to Tachileik, Thailand, for drug production. He also highlighted the ongoing influx of Myanmar refugees into Thailand due to the Myanmar military’s airstrikes and the recent incident where Myanmar soldiers fired upon Thai fishing boats and captured fishermen. These issues will also be discussed in the parliament.
