Bangkok Post reports that Thai Foreign Minister, Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, has expressed Thailand’s support for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Myanmar. He stated that Thailand is facilitating humanitarian aid to Myanmar. Mr. Sangiampongsa made the remarks while attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he is discussing UN reform aimed at strengthening international peace, stability, and conflict resolution.
Thailand is also positioning itself to join BRICS, a group formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, focused on economic cooperation and development. The Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of Thailand’s participation in the group. Myanmar’s Military Council has expressed interest in joining BRICS as an observer, reportedly viewing the group as an opportunity to reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar and potentially gain financial and administrative support. The South China Morning Post noted that Myanmar’s military leadership sees BRICS as a way to gain legitimacy and financial backing.
