Ahead of super typhoon Kong-rey’s expected landfall in Taiwan on October 30, authorities declared a public holiday for all major cities and counties, and financial markets were closed.
Predicted to be the strongest typhoon in three decades, Kong-rey has led to the cancellation of all domestic and international flights. Taiwan's Central Meteorological Department forecasts that the storm’s center will cross the island’s eastern mountains around 2:00 p.m. local time on October 31.
With high-speed winds and heavy rainfall, nearly the entire island is anticipated to experience severe weather conditions. Kong-rey is projected to be the most powerful typhoon to strike Taiwan since 1996.
Given the intense winds, which are expected to reach over 160 kilometers per hour in Taitung County on the east coast, officials have urged residents to stay indoors and issued warnings for potentially hazardous conditions island-wide.
