Refugees Stranded as China Closes Border Following Fighting Near Pang War, Kachin State

Due to clashes near Pang War, Kachin State, Chinese authorities closed the border gates on the morning of October 17, preventing civilians fleeing the conflict from entering China.

Following the Kachin Independence Army (KIA)’s capture of the military junta's outposts—Chan Ying Ku outpost and two guardposts of the Border Guard Force No. 1003 (BGF 1003) near Pang War and Kan Paik Ti—the fighting reached the outskirts of Pang War, forcing civilians to flee.

“Fighting has reached the area near Pang War Town, and the people are preparing to flee. Chinese side has remained silent but closed the gates. About 500 people are stuck at the border. Some have left and plan to cross once the gates reopen, while others are waiting near the gate. Even during last night’s heavy rain, they didn’t leave,” said a local news source.

A KIA source stated, “We’ve captured Chan Ying Ku outpost, which is only about 6 miles from Pang War. We didn't manage to take BGF 1003 yet; we’ve only seized its two guardposts. BGF 1003 is located near Shein Kyaing village and 7 miles from Kan Paik Ti. The fighting is still intense.”
