Over 70 IDPs Missing After Boat Capsizes in Tanintharyi Region

Over 70 people are missing after a boat carrying around 100 passengers capsized in Pulaw Township, Tanintharyi Region.

The incident occurred last night in the sea near Kyauk Kar village. As of now, only over 20 people have been rescued, and 8 bodies have been recovered, leaving more than 70 still missing, according to local reports.

The capsized boat is a fishing vessel and was reportedly carrying villagers fleeing from the airstrikes launched by the military junta in the ongoing conflict along the Pulaw-Myeik Union Road. The villagers were escaping to Myeik.

“The boat was traveling from the island village of Kyauk Kar to Myeik. It capsized around 9 p.m. last night, with about 100 people on board. This morning, we found the bodies of one infant and seven women and gave a proper funeral procession. Most of the passengers are still missing,” a local resident said.

Kyauk Kar village is a large island settlement near Me Laung Chaung, where fierce fighting has been ongoing since October 14.
