The NUG government appointed Mr. Sean Turnell as a special adviser to the Central Bank in the interim.

The National Unity Government (NUG) announced on June 13th, today, that it has appointed Mr. Sean Turnell, an Australian economist, as a special adviser to the Central Bank in the interim.

Interim Central Bank Chairman U Tin Tun Naing said that the appointment was made by the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The announcement states that the National Unity Government has exercised its authority under the decree (1, 2013) which is in force as a law.

The National Unity Government (NUG) has established an interim central bank since June 1st and appointed U Tin Tun Naing, Minister of Planning, Finance and Investment, as its chairman.

In the meantime, the central bank will carry out its duties as a central bank. He said that he will have to deal with matters such as verifying the companies and issuing business licenses.

The announcement of his appointment did not detail the duties of Mr. Sean Turnell, who became a special advisor to the Central Bank in the interim.

When the military junta took power in February of 2021, Mr. Sean Turnell was also arrested along with President U Win Myint and State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

He was sentenced to three years in prison for violating the State Secrets Act and immigration laws, but he served almost two years. He was released on November 17th of 2022.

The military council released Mr. Sean Turnell, the economic adviser to the State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, from prison and sent him into exile.

However, the military council revoked Mr. Sean Turnell’s amnesty after he was released from prison in 2022, accusing him of making false statements about Myanmar on social networks and news media. It was announced on December 6th.

Mr. Sean Turnell wrote on social media when he came to his mother country, Australia, that the most sensitive people of Myanmar are being ruled by vile and insane people.

He also wrote that although he is happy to be reunited with his family, the 53 million people of Myanmar continue to suffer at the hands of rulers who do not represent them.

Mr. Sean Turnell, who met and became close with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in the 1990s, and when this ruling party won the election again and became the government, he was appointed as the economic advisor of the State Counselor.

Mr. Sean Turnell reviewed the projects that will be carried out with the loans that were carried out under the previous military regimes and President U Thein Sein and Central bank reform and exchange rate stabilization were carried out as well.
