Nearly 4,000 residents fled due to the arrival of a column in Hpruso

According to the residents of Hpruso, since September 9th, nearly 4,000 residents have been forced to flee to the jungles because the Military Council has launched a military offensive against the MarKhawShae and Kayhlyar groups in the eastern part of Hpruso Township. "When the column enters, they shoot with heavy weapons. The locals are scared and run away. There are about four thousand refugees. Refugees who came near those villages had to flee again. Elderly people and children have to run first. There are only a few men left as housekeepers in the village."

Ma Phaw said that among those fleeing are around 1,500 people living in eight refugee camps near those villages. There are 9 villages in the MarKhawShae group and 11 villages in the Kayhlar group.

A person helping Karenni war refugees based in Demoso Township said that since the night of September 11, the battle between the Military Council and the Karenni Defense Forces, which had been patrolling the villages of Hpruso town and Demoso road, has continued. A person helping Karenni war refugees said that residents of the villages living on the east side of Fruso are fleeing because of the battle between the military council and the Karenni Defense Forces. “Most of the villagers on the east side of Hpruso and Kayhlyar, HtaeLae are fleeing. Now that the battle area is wider, so people have to flee.” He said that due to the security situation, refugee camps cannot be built again, so the refugees are staying in the jungles.

The Karenni Defense Forces have not released any information about the current battle situation.

According to Karenni Human Rights Organization lists as of September 2023, since the military coup, more than 250,000 refugees are fleeing because of the battles in Kayah State.
