Myanmar’s Upcoming Election Cannot Be Free or Fair, U.S. Official Says

The U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice, Beth Van Schaack, stated that the upcoming election, planned by Myanmar's military council, cannot be considered free or fair. She emphasized that it will serve only to return power to the military.

“The election is merely an attempt to restore power to the military. It’s hard to imagine how a fair election can be managed, given the widespread conflict across almost every part of the country,” Van Schaack said.

The military council, which has been labeled a terrorist group by some, has also indicated that next year’s election will not meet democratic standards, according to Van Schaack’s remarks. Despite this, the military is currently conducting a nationwide census in preparation for the elections they claim will take place next year.
