Myanmar Military General Surrenders for First Time in 70-Year History

In an unprecedented event in the 70-year history of the Myanmar Army, the regional commander of the Northeast Command, Major-General Soe Tint, along with other senior officers, surrendered to the Kokang Army (MNDAA). This occurred after the fall of the Northeast Command in Lashio, Northern Shan State, Myanmar.


On July 3rd, joint forces led by the Kokang Army launched an attack on Lashio City. By August 2nd, they had successfully captured the military hospital near the Northeast Command Headquarters. The next day, on August 3rd, the Kokang Army advanced and captured the Northeast Command Headquarters.


A video released by the Kokang Army shows Major-General Soe Tint, the commander of the Northeast Command, calmly surrendering along with his soldiers, unarmed. Alongside him, Brigadier-General Thant Htin Soe, Chief of Staff of the Command, and Brigadier-General Myo Min Htwe, commander of No. 1 Military Operations Command, were also captured alive.

A spokesman for the Myanmar Army, Major-General Zaw Min Tun, stated that the senior officers from the Northeast Command personally led the battle until communication was lost at 6:30 PM on August 3rd. He added that reports of the arrest of some officials are still being confirmed.


As of now, during the ongoing battle for Lashio City, it has been reported that 2,661 soldiers and their family members who were arrested or surrendered have been released by the Kokang Army.
