Myanmar Junta’s Airstrike on Laiza Provokes Chinese Counter-Warning Shot

On the night of August 15, the headquarters of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) in Laiza, Kachin State, near the China-Myanmar border, was targeted by an airstrike from the coup forces, according to local residents. The airstrikes followed the KIA's capture of two coup military bases on the same day near Hpakant.

Colonel Naw Bu, who is in charge of KIO (Kachin Independence Organization) news and information, commented on the situation: "It must be assumed that the Chinese fired for their own security. The planes were also flying regularly. I don't know what they fired at. The sound was very loud, and it was an explosion in the sky. I don't know what weapon it was. It shot more than 10 times. It's not flares," he said.

Residents reported that there were aircraft flying along the border from the Chinese side and that they heard about three bombings. The Chinese side reportedly fired more than 10 warning shots. The location of the bombings appeared to be some distance from Laiza.

Since the beginning of 2024, the roads leading to and from Hpakant, a city famous for its jade, have been closed. Currently, only five coup army camps remain in Hpakant, which is now under KIA control.

Since the start of 2024, KIA joint forces have captured nearly 200 military bases from the coup army across Kachin State, including in the towns of Dawthphoneyan, Lwegel, Myohla, Sinbo, Injanyang, Sumprabum, and Sadon.
