The 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has announced its award winners, with Myanmar filmmaker The Maw Naing’s *MA – Cry of Silence* taking home the prestigious New Currents Award. The film was co-produced by Myanmar, South Korea, Singapore, France, Norway, and Qatar.
“MA – Cry of Silence” portrays the despair, oppression, and hardships faced by garment factory workers in a major city following the military coup in Myanmar. The film focuses on the struggles of an 18-year-old girl trying to survive under these difficult circumstances.
Director The Maw Naing shared his pride on social media, commending his film crew for their dedication to bringing this powerful story to life. The Maw Naing is no stranger to international recognition—he previously won a special award at the International Film Festival in Romania in 2014 for his film ‘The Monk”.
