Modi to Discuss Myanmar Issue with Regional Leaders at ASEAN Summit

India’s Foreign Secretary Jaideep Mazumdar stated on Wednesday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold discussions with regional leaders during his upcoming visit to Laos on the Myanmar issue. He emphasized that India remains firmly committed to resolving the Myanmar crisis through dialogue. Mazumdar made the remarks during a press conference.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Vientiane on October 10 and 11 to attend the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the East Asia Summit, both hosted by Laos, the current chair of ASEAN.

The East Asia Summit will bring together regional leaders and foreign ministers, where Myanmar’s situation is expected to be a key point of discussion, Mazumdar noted.

He further expressed India’s support for ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar and the efforts of the ASEAN Special Envoy in coordinating with India. He voiced concern over the ongoing violence and instability in Myanmar, which has persisted since the military coup three years ago, stating that it poses a threat to regional security.
