Peng Daxun, Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) or the Kokang army, met with a Chinese delegation in Kunming, Yunnan Province, amid pressure from various sides.
This meeting followed a warning from China to the MNDAA not to engage with Western nations. While neither party released an official statement about the discussions, analysts suggest that China may be pressuring the MNDAA to negotiate with the military junta.
Currently, the military continues near-daily airstrikes on Lashio, a town under MNDAA control, while China has also suspended trade routes with MNDAA-controlled areas and blocked the import of goods from the Wa region to Kokang.
In a recent statement on September 4, the MNDAA has requested China’s mediation to resolve conflicts and has stated its intention to cooperate through a ceasefire, asserting that it has no plans to expand its military operations.
