Military Destroys and Removes General Aung San Statue in Thazi, Mandalay Region

In Mandalay Region's Thazi Township, the military demolished and removed the statue of national leader General Aung San.

In the early hours of October 9, around 1:00 a.m., the military cut off electricity to the entire Thazi Township and demolished the open space and the bronze statue of General Aung San using excavators. After that, the statue was loaded onto military vehicles and transported to Light Infantry Battalion 419 (LIB-419).

A local resident reported, "They cut off the electricity at 1:00 a.m. this morning. After that, they used backhoes and excavators to destroy the statue and the open space. The military completely wiped out the foundation of the statue. The statue was then taken to LIB-419. After the destruction, they restored power at around 4:00 a.m. Now, the entire area around the statue is cordoned off with green cloth.”

The bronze statue of General Aung San, weighing 450 viss (approximately 733 kg) and standing 9 feet tall, was installed on January 4, 2019, on a 63-foot-long, 57-foot-wide platform near the Thazi Park on the Meiktila-Taunggyi road.
