Myanmar's Mandalay Region People's Defense Force (MDY-PDF) captured the 5,400-acre Phayaungtaung Gold Mine in Patheingyi Township, located 14 miles east of Mandalay. Reports indicate that Phayaungtaung Gold Mine is a joint venture between the No. 2 Mining Industry under the coup army and the Myanmar Golden Point Family Company, owned by former Chief Minister U Maung Ko. It is estimated that more than 4,700 tons of gold and mixed metal are present.
The Mandalay People's Defense Force dropped a bomb using a ground-controlled drone on the coup army camp, which had around 30 individuals stationed near the gold mine. Some soldiers were seriously injured, and the camp was damaged before they eventually abandoned it. MDY-PDF released news on August 7 stating that an airstrike by the coup's air force killed seven people and injured another seven in Phayaungtaung village on the night of August 6.
Among the more than 300 individuals, including employees and their families, about 100 were trapped in the gold mining area. It is known that the Phayaungtaung mine produces 1 viss of refined gold per month, while the Kyaukpahto gold mine in Kawlin Township, Sagaing Region, a joint venture between No. 2 Mining Industry and former Mandalay Region Chief Minister U Maung Ko, produces up to 7 viss of refined gold per month.
The sanctions list when the US government sanctioned four Regional and State Chief Ministers of the Military Council. The Mandalay People's Defense Force also attacked and captured a gold-producing area in Singu, another gold-producing town in Thabeikkyin. In Patheingyi and Madaya, fighting between the coup army and the revolutionary forces continues to intensify.
