Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim Pledges to Enhance Engagement on Myanmar Crisis

Regarding the resolution of Myanmar's crisis, Malaysia will increase its engagement with relevant organizations, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated during a press conference after the 44th and 45th ASEAN summits and related meetings held in Laos.

He mentioned that Myanmar was beginning to open its doors to negotiations with Malaysia, which is a positive development. He also disclosed that Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan would coordinate negotiations and increase engagements with relevant stakeholders in Myanmar.

As part of its Myanmar policy, ASEAN leaders have agreed on five consensus points, but due to the necessity for higher-level discussions, the Malaysian Prime Minister stated that clear issues need to be articulated with Myanmar.

Since the military seized power in 2021, approximately 4,000 people have been killed, and nearly a million have been displaced. Prime Minister Ibrahim noted that Malaysia is currently hosting around 200,000 Myanmar refugees.

The recent ASEAN summits held in Laos gave top priority to discussions on Myanmar's crisis, aiming to ensure the continued stability and peace of the Southeast Asian region.
