KNU said that there is no need to comply with the NCA contract

KNU said that there is no need to comply with the NCA contract because the military council acted in direct contravention of it.

The Karen National Union (KNU) said that there is no longer any reason to follow the NCA.

KNU General Secretary Pado Saw Tah Do Mu said that "It was the army that trampled and destroyed the basic principles of Chapter 1, which is the heart of the NCA, and that heart has been destroyed, so the NCA no longer exists." General Secretary Pado Saw Tah Do Mu gave this answer to a reporter's question at a press conference held today on the 100th anniversary of the KNU Congress. Chapter (1) of the NCA agreement states that among the basic principles, is "to end the long history of armed conflicts in Myanmar through discussion and negotiation, and to establish a new political culture that will solve political problems by political means rather than by military means, and to put an end to armed conflicts."

Min Aung Hlaing, the military leader of the coup d'état, said at the meeting of the Military Council held on July 31 that he would do everything possible to achieve lasting peace in the country as part of the five-step process. Additionally, the military leader said that 22 peace talks have been held with the three groups that have not yet signed the NCA and 7 groups signed the NCA from February 1st, 2023, to July 27th, but the three groups that have signed the NCA did not attend the talks are carrying out terrorist attacks. The military leader has repeatedly said that he will try to achieve peace by implementing the agreements in the NCA agreement, but there have been clashes between groups that have signed the NCA agreement and groups that have not yet signed it since the coup.

KNU General Secretary Pado Saw Tah Do Mu criticized the coup leader as using the NCA agreement only to deceive the international community and the public. He said that "The use of NCA to deceive the international community or the public has nothing to do with us."

The Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) was signed in 2015 under President U Thein Sein's government. On October 15th, the army and eight ethnic armed groups signed an agreement. The Lahu Democratic Union and the New Mon State Party were added on February 13, 2018, under the NLD government.

After the military coup in February 2021, the KNU, the ABSDF, and the CNF, which signed the NCA, have stopped negotiating with the military council and are joining forces with other revolutionary forces to fight back against the coup d'état military council.
