On November 2, after Kachin Independence Army (KIA) forces captured the town of Phi Maw in Chipwi Township, Kachin State, China unilaterally closed the Pianma border crossing on the China-Myanmar border, according to a border source.
“The Chinese side issued a letter stating that the entry and exit route on the Chinese side adjacent to Phi Maw would be closed from November 2 at 12:00 p.m. The reason given is to upgrade infrastructure. However, no reopening date was mentioned, implying an indefinite closure,” said a China-Myanmar source.
Other KIA-controlled border crossings were also shut down by the Chinese side overnight.
China closed the Nabang-Laiza Route, Sima-Linzen Route, and Khron Route, citing infrastructure and system upgrades as the reason, according to official notifications from Chinese authorities.
In Kachin Special Region 1, only one town remains uncaptured by KIA forces—the China-Myanmar border town of Kan Paik Ti.
