International Anti-Corruption Day (December 9, 2024) : Feature Article

The Leader of Corruption Points Fingers at Their Subordinates for Being Corrupt

During the International Anti-Corruption Day ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw on December 9, military leader General Min Aung Hlaing declared that individuals involved in corruption would face prosecution and that their illicit gains would be confiscated and designated as public property.

Corruption is often perceived as merely taking bribes, but it is, in reality, a deep-rooted and pervasive issue within human society,” the military leader stated. He elaborated that corruption encompasses extortion, fraud, misuse of state funds and assets, personal exploitation of public resources, and actions driven by self-interest.

Min Aung Hlaing also emphasized the broader consequences of corruption, describing it as a global issue that fuels criminal activities, encourages terrorism, and undermines the rule of law and democracy. He referred to it as a “serious societal disease.”

However, his statements have been met with skepticism. Since 2011, when Min Aung Hlaing assumed the role of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, his son, Aung Pyae Sone, and daughter, Khin Thiri Thet Mon, have been involved in various business ventures.
