The Arakan Army (AA) announced the return of stolen belongings to residents of Buthidaung Township in a statement released on Tuesday, December 4. The transfer of items, part of a broader effort to restore property to rightful owners, took place during a formal ceremony held on November 30.
The AAโs statement detailed the process, explaining that during the battles to capture Buthidaung Township earlier this year, and in its aftermath, thieves took advantage of gaps in governance and security, looting homes and properties across various communities.
Following its complete control of Buthidaung on May 18, the AA stated that it had carried out thorough investigations and identified individuals involved in theft and arson. The perpetrators were reportedly found to include individuals affiliated with extremist groups such as ARSA, RSO, and ARA, as well as those trained by the military junta.
The November 30 ceremony marked the first phase of the return process, during which recovered belongings were handed back to 31 verified owners. According to the AA, unclaimed items have been classified as public property to assist the wider community, while additional recovered goods will be returned to owners in upcoming phases.
The AA acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by residents, including adverse weather, health issues, and other hardships, and emphasized its commitment to ensuring that undamaged belongings are returned to rightful owners under safe conditions.
