On October 29, the European Union imposed sanctions on members of the Myanmar Military Council’s Border Guard, including Colonel Saw Chit Thu, Major Mote Thon, Major Tin Win, and Chit Lin Myaing Company.
The territory controlled by Colonel Saw Chit Thu along the Thailand-Myanmar border has become a hub for transnational crime, including online fraud, drug and human trafficking, as well as severe human rights abuses such as forced labor and torture.
Chit Lin Myaing Company is closely associated with the Military Council and has been involved in intelligence gathering against military opponents and recruiting soldiers.
In addition to Saw Chit Thu, Major Mote Thon and Major Tin Win are reported to work with online fraud operations like the KK Park Project and Huanya Project in Shwe Kokko, near Myawady. They are reportedly profiting from these online fraud schemes.
The EU stated that these sanctions demonstrate its commitment to addressing severe human rights violations in Myanmar and countering online fraud that threatens peace, security, and regional stability. Currently, the EU has sanctioned a total of 106 individuals and 22 organizations from Myanmar.
