Brazilโ€™s Federal Police arrested former Defense Minister and retired four-star General Walter Souza Braga Netto on Saturday (December 14), in the plot to overturn the 2022 election narrowly won by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Braga Netto, who served as Chief of Staff during the government of Jair Bolsonaro, and his running mate in the failed 2022 reelection bid against Lula, is accused of organizing and financing the coup plan. Investigators allege he held meetings to discuss the assassination of Lula, Vice President-elect Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

The arrest followed new evidence uncovered by authorities, which also pointed to Braga Nettoโ€™s attempts to obstruct the investigation by seeking access to statements from other suspects. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who ordered the arrest, emphasized the severity of the accusations. His lawyers deny the accusations and vow to prove his innocence.

This marks the first arrest of a four-star general in Brazil, a historic move as authorities intensify efforts to hold individuals accountable for attempts to undermine democracy after the 2022 election.โฉ
