Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was born on December 11, 1951, and was 73 years old at the time of his passing.
A native of Mandalay, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung studied at St. Peter’s High School and Mandalay Medical University, where he graduated with a medical degree in 1979. He entered the political sphere after the 1988 pro-democracy uprising while working as a biology lecturer at Mandalay Medical University.
In the multi-party general elections of 1990, he was elected as a representative of the National League for Democracy (NLD) from Amarapura Township but was sentenced to 25 years in prison under Section 122 of the Penal Code due to the political climate at the time. He was released on February 21, 2009.
In the 2012 by-elections, he was elected as a Pyithu Hluttaw (House of Representatives) member representing Kyaukpadaung Township. He was re-elected in the 2015 general elections as a Mandalay Regional Hluttaw member for Amarapura Township and became the Chief Minister of Mandalay Region.
On the day of the 2021 military coup, he was arrested along with his family. While his family members were later released under house arrest, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung and other regional government officials were transferred to Obo Prison.
On June 17, 2022, the Mandalay Region Court under the military junta sentenced Dr. Zaw Myint Maung to 21 years in prison on alleged corruption charges.
During his time at Obo Prison after the coup, he contracted COVID-19 on August 6, 2021, and was transferred to Mandalay General Hospital for treatment. He recovered and was sent back to Obo Prison on August 27. His health deteriorated again starting from September 2024, and he was transferred to Mandalay General Hospital for further treatment.
On October 5, 2024, due to further deterioration of his health, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Mandalay General Hospital and passed away at 3 a.m. on October 7. Just before his passing, the military junta announced on October 6, 2024, that all charges against him were dropped.
Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, who served as the Vice Chairman (2) of the NLD and as Chief Minister of Mandalay Region from 2016 to 2021, passed away at the age of 73 at Mandalay General Hospital.
