Diplomatic Talks on Myanmar to be Held in Indonesia

Indonesia will host discussions involving international leaders and Myanmar’s opposition forces on the country’s ongoing civil war, which erupted following the military coup. An Indonesian diplomat confirmed to AFP on Thursday that the talks will begin today, Friday, in Jakarta.

This Myanmar-focused dialogue is a prior discussion ahead of the ASEAN Summit set to take place in Laos on October 6. Indonesian government officials, as well as representatives from ASEAN, the European Union, and the United Nations, will attend. However, Myanmar's military junta is unlikely to attend, according to the diplomat. Representatives from the opposition forces fighting against the junta will also attend.

The diplomatic talks, aimed at addressing Myanmar’s civil war and finding a path to peace, will be held over two days, on Friday and Saturday.

ASEAN has previously established a Five-Point Consensus to help resolve the conflict and guide Myanmar back to democracy. While diplomatic efforts have been made, significant progress has yet to be achieved. The Myanmar issue will be a central topic at the upcoming ASEAN Summit from October 6 to 11.
