Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's special appeals were rejected.
The Union Supreme Court announced that State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been accused of being jailed, and it rejected the appeals of the six corruption cases that were filed for special appeal. These cases are related to the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation, which accuses Daw Aung San Suu Kyi of committing corruption, that's four cases and two cases related to businessman U Maung Weik.
Last August 29, the Union Supreme Court rejected the special appeal of five of the cases in which Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was accused and imprisoned. Lawyers have been requesting due to the need to discuss these appeal cases with clients, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and President U Win Myint since January 2023 but the military council has not yet responded. Therefore, in the cases that have been appealed, the appeals are continuously being rejected without the opportunity for the clients and lawyers to meet face-to-face and discuss the content of the case.
The 78-year-old Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was serving a 33-year prison sentence for 19 cases accused by the military council, but on August 1, she was released for six years for five cases, and now she is serving a 27-year prison sentence. Sources close to the court said that the remaining cases in which Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was imprisoned are still in the appeal process at the Union Supreme Court.
