China to Allow Goods Through Jiegao-Manwein Crossing with Myanmar, Restricts Other Trade Routes

Yunnan Provincial authorities announced on November 8 that the Jiegao-Manwein crossing at the Muse-Jiegao border trade zone will be reopened on November 11 and that it will be the sole official channel for all legal trade goods.

The announcement included that the Sinphyu crossing at the Muse-Jiegao border trade zone, which has previously allowed informal trade, will no longer permit passenger vehicles, two- and three-wheel motorcycles, or trishaws to cross and trade.

A local resident from Muse confirmed the information, stating that they had heard trade would resume the following day. They also mentioned that four-wheel vehicles, smaller vehicles, and small cargo trucks would be restricted at Sinphyu crossing, while they would be allowed to pass through Manwein crossing.

A China affairs observer also wrote on his social media regarding border trade restrictions in Ruili, noting that the announcement to restrict trade to official gates only and stop illegal smuggling is hilarious since large numbers of trucks carrying timber, jade, and amber from Myanmar were still crossing illegally despite the rules.

He also commented that only China is suffering losses from the recent closing of border trade gates in northern Shan State and Kachin State. Due to this situation, it would be necessary for China to reopen these gates.

At present, in Muse, people are only allowed to pass through Jiegao in China through the Nantaw crossing, while goods transport is still restricted.
