China Responds to Ceasefire Threat Sent to the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA)

In response to a question from an AFP news correspondent during a press conference on August 30 regarding a warning letter sent by the State Security Committee of Ruili City in China, demanding that the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which is actively participating in the second phase of "Operation 1027" in northern Shan State and Mandalay Region, immediately cease fire, Mr. Lin Jian, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded that China is “closely following the situation in Myanmar and the developments of the conflict in northern Myanmar” and has consistently worked to promote peace talks and a ceasefire. The Chinese Embassy in Myanmar released this information on August 31.

Responding to the AFP correspondent's inquiry about whether China had asked the TNLA to stop fighting and the current situation at the China-Myanmar border, Mr. Lin Jian added that as Myanmar's biggest neighbor, China sincerely hopes for Myanmar's stability and development and is actively working towards it. He also emphasized that China will continue to play a constructive role in Myanmar's peace and reconciliation process and will promote de-escalation of the situation in northern Myanmar.

On August 29, 2024, a stern warning letter was sent to the TNLA by the Chinese State Security Committee in Ruili City, urging them to cease hostilities in Shan State North and along the border areas immediately. The letter expressed China's hope that the TNLA would cooperate to maintain peace and stability in the border areas and avoid military actions that endanger the safety of border residents, Chinese businesses in Myanmar, and Chinese nationals. It also warned that China would take "more deterrent and disciplinary measures" and TNLA must be “responsible for the consequences” if TNLA did not comply. The warning letter was sent following China's military exercises at the Myanmar border between August 27 and 29. TNLA spokesperson Lway Yay Oo confirmed receipt of the letter, stating that it is still under discussion by the central committee and that there has been no immediate response yet.
