Northern Shan, December 4, 2024
On December 3, 2024, the Kokang army, known as the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), declared a unilateral ceasefire, responding to Chinaโs urging for an end to hostilities. The group confirmed that it would not initiate further military offensives and would halt all combat operations against the Myanmar military.
The MNDAA expressed its willingness to resolve ongoing conflicts, including the Laukkai region issue, through peaceful negotiations, with China facilitating the process. The MNDAA clarified that its goal is not to secede from Myanmar but to gain autonomy for the region it controls.
In its statement, the MNDAA also called on the Myanmar military to halt its airstrikes and ground offensives across the country. The MNDAA emphasized its commitment to engaging in high-level discussions aimed at resolving the political and military tensions between the two sides. However, while supporting negotiations, the group reaffirmed its right to self-defense and vowed to continue its defensive actions.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently responded to reports that U Phonta Shwe, the MNDAAโs leader, had been detained by China since October. The ministry denied the reports, claiming that the leader is receiving medical treatment within China.
The MNDAA had previously captured nine towns, including Lashio, in northern Shan State during Operation 1027 that began in October last year.
