President-elect Donald Trump announced on December 11 his nomination of Kari Lake as the new director of Voice of America (VOA). Trump stated that Lake would ensure the promotion of American values of freedom to global audiences, contrasting this with what he described as 'the lying news media that spread fake news.' The announcement was made on Truth Social.

Trump has previously criticized VOA, notably in 2020, when he accused the broadcaster of airing content that he claimed highlighted frustrations with the United States.

Lake expressed pride in her nomination, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that she looks forward to leading VOA, which broadcasts in 48 languages. She emphasized her commitment to enhancing VOA's mission, including documenting the history of American success.

VOA broadcasts radio and television news to audiences across Asia, Europe, and Africa, including its Myanmar department. The agency is internationally recognized for its independent and accurate reporting.
