ASEAN Urged to Resolve Myanmar Crisis with Firm Measures

Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have called on Myanmar's military council and opposition forces to take concrete steps to end the ongoing conflict in the country.

According to AFP, ASEAN condemned the civilian casualties resulting from the conflict and urged all parties to take decisive action to halt the violence. This call for action was outlined in a draft statement expected to be released after the ASEAN summit.

During today's ASEAN meeting in Laos, Thailand proposed a new approach to finding a political solution to the Myanmar crisis. As part of ASEAN’s peace efforts, Thailand expressed its willingness to cooperate with other member countries. Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura told reporters that Thailand aims to help broker a political solution.

Thailand also offered to host informal talks between ASEAN members in December, in an effort to address the conflict that has displaced millions of people.

ASEAN had previously established a Five-Point Consensus to resolve the crisis following Myanmar’s 2021 military coup, but implementation has been ineffective. As a result, ASEAN barred Myanmar’s military council from attending high-level meetings for failing to enforce the agreed measures.
