In early October 2024, ASEAN leaders acknowledged the ongoing talks concerning Myanmar in Jakarta, Indonesia. An informal meeting on Myanmar is scheduled to take place in Thailand in December. On October 9, ASEAN leaders issued a statement expressing hope that more ASEAN countries would participate in these discussions.
During a summit held in Vientiane, Laos, ASEAN leaders reaffirmed the Five Point Consensus as the primary framework for addressing Myanmar’s political crisis and agreed to maintain it as a reference point.
The implementation of the ASEAN Five Point Consensus was also reviewed, with ASEAN leaders urging that full implementation should be achieved with the consent of all people in Myanmar to foster a long-lasting and peaceful resolution to the crisis.
In April 2021, two months after the military coup, ASEAN leaders approved the Five Point Consensus to address the Myanmar issue and have repeatedly urged the military council to halt violence and engage in inclusive political discussions. However, nearly four years later, there has been little progress.
