Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun Addresses Sipa Village Murders at United Nations

Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, highlighted the Sipa village murders as evidence of the military’s brutality during his address at the 79th United Nations General Assembly.

Speaking on October 29 at the third committee meeting of the General Assembly in New York, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun presented these remarks amid a joint discussion on Myanmar’s ongoing human rights crisis with various stakeholders.

Referring to the recent killings in Sipa village, Budalin Township, Sagaing Region, the ambassador described disturbing scenes, stating that several victims were reportedly mutilated, with severed body parts—heads and limbs—hanging on house fences.

“How are some UN member states supporting the inhuman military council by supplying arms, munitions, and related technologies?” the ambassador questioned, urging for accountability.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has repeatedly called on the Security Council to refer the situation in Myanmar to the International Criminal Court. Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun echoed this appeal, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the military council’s atrocities and the wider implications for regional stability.
