Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Tuesday that China would do its best to support peace efforts in northern Myanmar.
Responding to media questions on December 4, 2024, Lin Jian emphasized that China is closely monitoring developments in northern Myanmar and urged all relevant parties to cease hostilities immediately. He said China โhas been urging relevant parties of Myanmar to engage in dialogue and consultation, stop the fighting as soon as possible, settle differences through peaceful means, and avoid escalation.โ
The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) recently declared a unilateral ceasefire and expressed interest in holding talks with the Myanmar military junta under Chinaโs mediation. Lin commended this step and emphasized the need for stability and peace.
China also stressed the importance of protecting its border areas and ensuring the safety of its citizens and projects in Myanmar. The MNDAA had previously claimed that China detained its leader, Peng Daxun, in October as part of efforts to pressure the group. However, China denied this, stating that Peng was in China for medical treatment.
