Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has once again called on all parties involved in Myanmarโs conflicts to halt violence and ensure the protection of civilians in accordance with the countryโs laws. He also urged efforts to prevent racial tensions and incitement.
The UNโs statement came after the Arakha Army (AA) reportedly gained full control of key areas along the border with Bangladesh, including Maungdaw Township in Rakhine State, earlier this week.
Guterres expressed deep concern over reports of increasing numbers of civilians fleeing their homes as violence intensifies in Myanmar, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in New York on Thursday.
He also condemned airstrikes targeting civilians indiscriminately and the broader impact of military operations on civilian deaths across the country.
Myanmarโs crisis has affected neighboring countries, with the United Nations estimating that 1.3 million refugees and asylum seekers have fled the country, seeking safety in the region.
