The Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF) announced today that three individuals have been sentenced in connection with the deaths of 18 medical trainees who drowned during a night training program in Karenni State.
The incident occurred on September 11, when the trainees, organized by the KNDF Medical Department, were participating in a night exercise named โHappy.โ While attempting to cross a stream, 18 trainees were swept away and tragically lost their lives.
Following an investigation, the KNDF Central Court Martial found the individuals responsible for the incident guilty under Martial Law. The principal and a physical training instructor were each sentenced to one year and three months of hard labor under Articles 17 and 27 of Martial Law. A training assistant received a three-month sentence with hard labor under Article 27.
The deceased were members of the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF) and the Peopleโs Defense Force (PDF), operating under the National Unity Government (NUG).
