The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), Myanmarโs interim parliamentary body, has sent a congratulatory letter to South Koreaโs National Assembly for its swift action in blocking President Yoon Suk Yeolโs declaration of martial law. The letter, signed by CRPH Chairperson U Aung Kyi Nyunt, was delivered through the National Unity Governmentโs (NUG) South Korea Representative Office, following the South Korean parliamentโs decision to nullify the martial law decree just hours after it was announced on December 3, 2024.
The CRPH, which represents Myanmarโs elected lawmakers, praised South Korean lawmakers for their unity and timely intervention in preserving the countryโs democratic system. The CRPH praised the unity and determination shown by South Koreaโs lawmakers, calling their action a historic defense of democracy and a clear message to leaders who might seek to undermine democratic governance.
The letter emphasized the importance of the South Korean parliamentโs actions, stating, "Your timely intervention to prevent democratic backsliding sends a clear message to leaders contemplating similar actions that attempts to undermine democracy will not be tolerated. As fellow defenders of democracy, we stand in solidarity with you in your decisive efforts to protect political stability for your countryโs future.โ
The CRPH also stated that it continues to fight against military rule in Myanmar and stands with South Korea in upholding democracy worldwide.
President Yoon Suk Yeolโs martial law declaration, made during a late-night TV broadcast, was quickly opposed by the parliament, which voted overwhelmingly to revoke it.โฉ
