Amid intense fighting between Kachin Independence Army (KIA)-allied forces and military junta troops in Bhamo, Kachin State, the Chinese government has invited the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) for talks. On December 8, KIO Chairman General N' Ban La and his delegation departed for China, according to KIA spokesperson Colonel Naw Bu.

However, he noted that China did not specify the topics to be addressed in the talks.
Since December 4, the KIA and its allied forces have been engaging in intense attacks on Bhamo, Kachin Stateโs second capital. Local residents report heavy clashes within the city.
KIA has also taken control of five trade gates along the Kachin-China border, which have now been closed, halting trade activities. Additionally, after seizing control of Special Region 1 in Kachin, KIA has gained control of over 300 rare earth mineral extraction sites, which represent more than 50% of global production.
According to a statement from Chinaโs tax department, over 26,892 tons of rare earth minerals, valued at over $600 million, were exported from Myanmar to China between February and August 2024.
